​In 2025 only 60.8% of IMGs who applied matched into a residency spot leaving 6,291 IMG applicants unmatched. The PGY1 match rate for US citizen IMGs was 67.8% and for non US citizen IMGs 58%, now showing a downward trend for the third consecutive year. In 2020 there were 12,074 IMG applicants for a US residency spot, and in 2025 that number has increased to 18,500 applicants.
